Is Your Home a Haven?

Writer: SpenceRedesignSpenceRedesign

Recently, I have been experiencing a growing sense of anxiety within me. I believe that I am not the only one feeling this, considering the ongoing turmoil in the world. Consequently, I have been thinking about the impact of our surroundings on our emotional wellbeing. In her Ted Talk, Ingrid Fettell Lee explores the link between physical objects and the emotional experience of joy, posing the question of how tangible items can evoke intangible feelings of joy.

Ethan Cross dedicates a whole chapter in his book Chatter to explore the impact of our environment on our internal dialogues. Research has indicated that individuals residing in tree-lined neighborhoods tend to be happier. I see sofas positioned in front of window in many homes. I prefer to place the sofa facing the window, particularly when there is a view of nature outside.

One quote from Marie Kondo that really speaks to me is "life truly begins only after you have put your house in order." After reading her book The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, I adopted the practice of asking myself and my clients if an item brings you joy. If not, it goes in the donation box. The tidiness and color pallet of this room brings me a sense of joy.

I believe we naturally gravitate towards things that make us happy. These items represent who you are and your personal taste. While some purchases are made out of necessity, even the necessities have a story to tell about us. I encourage you to take a moment and acknowledge the beauty that exists in your surroundings and allow the joy to follow. This could be looking at the view out your window, admiring the color of your walls, cherishing a gift from a dear friend, the time spent with loved ones in your kitchen, appreciating a piece of inherited furniture, enjoying handmade art, or reflecting on a family photograph.

If it is hard to see the beauty and if your home doesn't feel like a haven, let me help you uncover the beauty that I'm confident does exist.

During my Room Revamp process, I empty the space first and redesign it using your existing furniture, artwork, and accessories. By analyzing the room's architecture, I identify the optimal placement for your furnishings, resulting in a remarkable transformation that will bring a sense of wellbeing to your life. I don't want to change your style, I want to enhance it.

Before my Room Revamp this room had a disjointed feel due to an awkward traffic flow. The homeowners did not enjoy spending time together in this room.

Following my Room Revamp, this space now exudes a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, transforming it into a spot where the homeowners love to spend time with friends and family. All the items in this room were already present in the house and nothing new was purchased.

Thanks for considering the joy that already exists in your surroundings.

Sandra
